The word bigot may have originated as an insult used against the Normans, who supposedly said "bei Gott" (by god) a lot. Various apocrypha abound, such as the story of Duke Rollo refusing to kiss King Charles' unextended foot. Or it might have been a deviation of the word Visigoth. All we can be certain of is, the French are rude.
